JoJo's Bizarre Adventure (ジョジョの奇妙な冒険JoJo no Kimyō na Bōken), also known as JoJo's Bizarre Adventure: The Animation, is the first season of the anime television series produced by David Production based on the manga of the same name by Hirohiko Araki, adapting the first two arcs, Phantom Blood (ファントムブラッドFantomu Buraddo) and Battle Tendency (戦闘潮流Sentō Chōryū). The Phantom Blood arc, which aired on Tokyo MX between October 5 and November 30, 2012, revolves around the mysterious adventures of the Joestar family, beginning with an encounter involving Jonathan Joestar, his adoptive brother Dio Brando and a mysterious Stone Mask. The Battle Tendency arc, which aired on Tokyo MX between December 7, 2012, and April 5, 2013, focuses on Jonathan's grandson, Joseph Joestar, and his fight against the mysterious Pillar Men.

The series was released on a series of nine DVDs and Blu-rays between January 30 and September 27, 2013, with the Blu-ray releases having the option of English subtitles.^[1]Crunchyroll began streaming the series in April 2014. The English DVD was released by Warner Home Video on September 22, 2015 with both English and Japanese audio with closed captioning for the English dub only.^[2]Viz Media released an English Blu-ray set on July 25, 2017 that includes English and Japanese audio with new subtitles for the Japanese.^[3] A second season, JoJo's Bizarre Adventure: Stardust Crusaders, based on the series' third arc, began airing from April 4, 2014.

Plot[edit]

The first season was split into two parts: part 1 comprised episodes 1-9 covering the Phantom Blood manga arc, and part 2 comprised episodes 10-26 covering the Battle Tendency arc.

The first part, Phantom Blood, is set in Liverpool, England in 1880 and follows the adventures of a young man named Jonathan Joestar, known as JoJo, living on his wealthy father George's estate. George takes in a homeless boy, Dio Brando who bullies the innocent Jonathan, plotting to become the sole heir to the Joestar fortune. However, his attempts are thwarted and he resorts to using an ancient Stone Mask which transforms him into a vampire with his sights now set on world domination. Jonathan, with Italian Hamon master Will A. Zeppeli and former street thug Robert E.O. Speedwagon at his side, uses his newly found affinity for Hamon to stop Dio who appears to be killed and Jonathan passes away. However Jonathan's pregnant wife, Erina gives birth to a son, continuing the Joestar name.

The second part, Battle Tendency, takes place fifty years later in 1938 as Jonathan's grandson, Joseph Joestar. He hears of Speedwagon's apparent death during an excavation, and when he investigates, he becomes entangled with the revival of the Pillar Men, ancient humanoids of impossible power who are tied to the creation of the Stone Mask. Joseph ultimately teams up with Caesar Zeppeli, Will's grandson, and Caesar's teacher Lisa Lisa, who is linked to Joseph. They try to stop the Pillar Men led by Kars and Esidisi from obtaining a mystical artifact in Lisa Lisa's possession that will grant them complete immortality and bring about the end of the world. With the help of his friends and allies, Joseph eventually masters Hamon and beats the Pillar Men.

The first season of JoJo's Bizarre Adventure uses three pieces of theme music, two opening themes and one ending theme. The first opening theme is the song 'JoJo (Sono Chi no Sadame)' (ジョジョ～その血の運命～, 'JoJo ~That Blood's Destiny~') performed by Hiroaki 'Tommy' Tominaga, vocalist of Japanese 'brassrock' band Bluff, as the opening theme for the Part 1 episodes. The score for Part 1 was composed by Hayato Matsuo, and was released in two parts as Destiny, a bonus disc in the first Blu-ray box set released on January 30, 2013, and Future, a separate CD release on February 22, 2013. Future debuted at number 95 on the Billboard Japan Top Albums charts^[4] and peaked at 115 on the Oricon Weekly Album Charts.^[5] The opening theme song for the Part 2 episodes is 'Bloody Stream' by Coda.^[6] Its score is composed by Taku Iwasaki, and was released in two parts as Musik (German for 'Music'), a standalone CD release on March 29, 2013, and as Leicht Verwendbar (German for 'Light User'^[a]), a bonus disc for Blu-ray box set volume 4 on April 26, 2013. Musik debuted at number 63 on the Japan Top Albums charts^[7] and at 89 on the Weekly Album Charts.^[8] The ending theme for the whole season is British progressive rock band Yes' 1972 single 'Roundabout'.

England 1868. An elderly thief named Dario Brando was raiding an overturned carriage when he and his wife find two surviving occupants, a man and his young son are still alive. The man, George Joestar, assuming Dario saved his life, claims he will forever be indebted to him. Twelve years later, George's son Jonathan, nicknamed JoJo, is a young man with the intent to become a gentleman, such as fighting for a woman's honor even if he will not win. Meanwhile, Dario is on his deathbed and he tells his son Dio to move in with the Joestar family to fulfill George's life debt. Dio does so after paying his final disrespect over his father's grave, intending to take Joestar fortune for himself. Dio does this by outshining Jonathan while making him a pariah among his family and friends. Even Jonathan's childhood love with Erina Pendleton is not safe from Dio, who takes her first kiss and makes her unable to even look Jonathan in the eye. Upon learning of Dio's action, Jonathan flies into a rage and manages to land a powerful hit on Dio. Caught off guard, some of Dio's blood is spilled on an ancient Stone Mask that seems to react until the fight is broken up by George. Then, the butler notices a crate in the incinerator but lights it anyway. The incinerator door is being pounded on from the inside, and the butler realizes the crate contained someone inside and that they were burning alive. When Jonathan gets home, it is revealed that the butler killed his beloved dog Danny(the butler having lied about being responsible for it, claiming it to be a 'burglar'), and Jonathan instantly deduces that it was Dio who delibrately put Danny in the crate so he could be killed, a part of his plan to become the heir to the Joestar fortune.

Seven years later in 1888, Jonathan and Dio are supposedly getting along despite the former still fearful of his adopted brother with just reason. Soon after, George is ill and bed-ridden with Jonathan believing is more than a simple cold. While doing research on the strange mask, Jonathan finds the dying Dario's letter and finds the writer's symptoms are the same as his father's. Using Dio's pride against him, Jonathan deduces that Dio murdered his father and intends to do the same with George. After leaving instructions for only trusted doctors to tend to his father, Jonathan sets off to London to discover the origins of the poison. Fearing Jonathan would ruin his plans, Dio steals the Stone Mask with the intent to arrange an accidental death with it. Two days later, Jonathan's search takes him to the dodgy Ogre Street where he is attacked by a man in a bowler, using a sawblade. But Jonathan's sense of honor and desire to save his father convinces the bowler-wearing man to assist in the search for an Oriental druggist. Meanwhile, assuming that Jonathan died in Ogre Street, Dio crosses paths with two drunkards and the resulting scuffle ends with him slitting one of them to subject the other to an activated Stone Mask. But instead of the mask killing the second drunkard, Dio finds that it turned his victim into a powerful vampire that nearly kills him. Dio only just manages to survive due to the sunlight turning the vampire to dust. Returning to the mansion, Dio is confronted by Jonathan.

Having found an antidote, which he gave to George, Jonathan prepares to turn Dio in to the police. Dio attempts to lower Jonathan's guard to use his blood on the mask by feigning regret as he offers to turn himself in. But the bowler-wearing man, from Ogre Street, introducing himself as Robert E. O. Speedwagon, reveals himself while telling Jonathan that Dio is pure evil and brings the druggist Wang Chen who sold Dio the poison. George, having heard the whole thing, allows Jonathan and the constables to do what they must. While JoJo attempts to handcuff him, Dio attempts to stab him and ends up killing George and uses the mask on himself, while he is being killed by gunfire. Dying, George gives Jonathan his late mother's ring as the head constable reveals what George learned of Dario's nature before taking Dio in. George requests Jonathan to bear no ill will towards Dio before passing away, only for the vampirized Dio to come back to life and kills the constables while drinking the blood of one of them. Killing a vampirized constable, Jonathan attempts to kill Dio by focusing on his head. As several attempts to kill Dio fail, Jonathan sets the mansion ablaze and leads Dio to the roof so Speedwagon can escape. Jonathan attempts to sacrifice himself by dragging Dio down to a fiery death, but Dio's attempted counter forces Jonathan to use the layout to safely land while impaling Dio on the statue of Joestar family's guardian angel. As Speedwagon takes Jonathan away from the burnt ruins, it is revealed that Dio survived, as he drains Wang Chen of his blood, when Chen attempts to grab the mask from among the debris.

Three days after the incident, Jonathan awakens to find Erina nursing him back to health in the hospital. As they rekindle their friendship, they encounter a strange man named Will A. Zeppeli, who performs a technique on JoJo which allows him to soothe the pain of his broken arm. Zeppeli tells JoJo about the technique, known as the Hamon, which uses the energy of one's own body to perform impressive feats of strength. He also reveals that Dio still lives, and it is Jonathan's fate to go against the Stone Mask. As Jonathan ponders about not getting Erina involved, Zeppeli notices the ripple energy residing within him. Meanwhile, Dio continues to prowl London, recruiting the vilest men he knows into his undead army, including Jack the Ripper. As Zeppeli trains Jonathan to master the Hamon, he explains how he was one of the first to discover the Stone Mask and witness its dark powers, dedicating himself to mastering the Hamon in order to destroy it. Just then, Speedwagon informs them of people going missing in Windknights Lot, so the three of them travel there. Whilst passing through a tunnel into the town, they are attacked by Jack, and Zeppeli enters into a fight with him to give Jonathan his one and only lesson into how to use the Hamon. As Jack tries to lure them into a trap, Jonathan is tasked by Zeppeli to finish him off without spilling any of the wine he has poured into a glass. Using the wine, Jonathan comes to understand the Hamon, allowing him to kill Jack from the other side of a wall using his own Hamon technique: Overdrive.

Upon arriving in Windknights Lot, Jonathan's group is pickpocketed by a talented young boy named Poco who Jonathan and Zeppeli manage to catch using their ripple powers. However, as the sun falls, they find themselves confronted by Dio, who had hypnotised Poco to lure Jonathan's group to the graveyard where they are attacked by his legion of zombies. Zeppeli attempts to use his ripple attacks on Dio, but he counters by freezing his veins. After also managing to freeze Jonathan's hand, Dio summons two powerful zombie knights, Tarkus and Bruford, to finish the job for him. As Jonathan struggles against them, Speedwagon uses his body heat to thaw Zeppeli's arm. As the battle between JoJo and Bruford intensifies, it moves into the depths of a nearby lake. JoJo decides rather than trying to face Bruford during an ascent to the surface of the lake, he dives deeper. Bruford follows, but JoJo has managed to find a pocket of oxygen rich air under a rock, and uses this breath of air to launch a Turquoise Blue Overdrive attack at Bruford.

As Bruford manages to barely avoid Jonathan's attack, Jonathan is once again ensnared by his hair. However, Jonathan manages to block Bruford's attack and channel an Overdrive attack through his sword, disintegrating one of his arms, before unleashing a barrage against him. As Bruford's body starts to disintegrate, he regains his human soul, feeling at peace and leaving Jonathan his 'Sword of Luck and Pluck' before completely disintegrating. Tarkus then attacks, but Jonathan and Zeppeli manage to get Speedwagon and Poco to safety using a bunch of leaves as a hangglider. As they make their escape, Zeppeli recalls how he learned to control the Hamon from a man named Tonpetty. As Tarkus leaps after them, they touch down at a knight's training ground in order to stand against him. Jonathan is pulled inside the grounds by Tarkus, thrusting him into a Chain Neck Deathmatch, in which one must decapitate the other in order to free himself. Realizing Jonathan will be killed if no one does anything, Poco overcomes his nerves and enters the grounds via a window, managing to unlock the door so Zeppeli can get inside.

Zeppeli recalls how Tonpetty foretold where his death would take place; in the very place he is in right now. Knowing this, Zeppeli fights against Tarkus with the intention of finding a way to free JoJo. However, Tarkus ensnares Zeppeli with a chain and rips his body into two. Using the last of his strength, Zeppeli transfers the last of his Hamon energy to Jonathan, allowing him to heal his injuries, break free from his chains, and obliterate Tarkus. Following the battle, Zeppeli tells Jonathan that he has accepted his fate and has passed his will onto him before passing away. As Jonathan, Speedwagon, and Poco make their way back to Windknights Lot, they meet Tonpetty, along with his other students, Dire and Straizo. Meanwhile, it is revealed that Poco's sister, Peggy, has been kidnapped by Dio.

After Poco hears that Peggy has gone out to search for him, Dio sends a zombie named Doobie to attack Peggy after she refuses to join his legion. Luckily, Jonathan and the others arrive in time to save her. Doobie soon reveals that his head is filled with poisonous snakes, managing to deliver a few bites to Jonathan's face, but neither the venom nor Doobie stands up to Jonathan's power. With Poco and Peggy reunited, Jonathan goes on to face Dio. Dire decides to face him first and launches an attack, but he is caught by Dio's freezing ability and is shattered into pieces, though with his last breath, he manages to shoot a ripple-powered rose into Dio's eye. As Jonathan learns from that sacrifice how he can damage Dio using the sword he received from Bruford, he goes on to confront Dio whilst Tonpetty and Straizo take on his undead army. Jonathan manages to slice his sword straight through Dio's body, but Dio uses this opportunity to freeze his sword and attack Jonathan's neck. However, Jonathan manages to thaw himself by heating the sword with a torch, though Dio manages to protect himself from Jonathan's attack. Just then, Jonathan sets his fists on fire to counter Dio's freezing and manages to break through his defenses with an Overdrive attack. As his body melts and he falls into the abyss, Dio launches a final attack which pierces Jonathan's hand, but appears not to do much more. With Dio presumed dead, Jonathan takes a long earned rest from his battles.

Following the apparent defeat of Dio, and the destruction of the Stone Mask, Jonathan marries Erina and they head off on a honeymoon to America on a cruise across the Atlantic Ocean. But after sunset, Jonathan discovers that the zombified Wang Chan has snuck aboard and realizes Dio is still alive. Jonathan eventually comes face to face with the disembodied head of Dio, who decapitated himself to evade Jonathan's Hamon. Dio then reveals his intention to take Jonathan's body to replace his own as Erina arrives to see Jonathan receives a near-fatal attack to his neck. Meanwhile, the ship starts to run amock with zombies after Wang Chan spreads the infection. Using the last Hamon energy he has, Jonathan manages to decapitate Wang Chan and compel his body to obstruct a piece of the cruise ship's mechanism, setting the ship on a path to explosion. As Erina resolves to die by her husband's side, Jonathan instead tells her to live on and protect a baby whose mother died during the zombie attack. As the ship starts to explode, Dio makes a last-ditch attempt to take Jonathan's body, but Jonathan stops him, passing away with Dio's head in his arms whilst Erina and the baby hide in Dio's bomb-proof coffin to protect them from the explosion. Erina is eventually rescued near the Canary Islands a day later, and vows to pass on the truth of what happened on February 8, 1889 to the unborn child she conceived with Jonathan and generations to follow.

In 1938, 49 years after Jonathan Joestar's death, Robert E.O. Speedwagon has become a wealthy oil tycoon. He requests Straizo's aid when his expedition crew uncovers a tomb in Mexico filled with Stone Masks and a petrified yet living body embedded in a stone pillar. However Straizo, obsessed with immortality, kills Speedwagon's archaeological team and uses some of the wounded Speedwagon's blood to activate a Stone Mask. Meanwhile, in New York, Jonathan's grandson, Joseph Joestar (JoJo), uses his Hamon to save a young pickpocket named Smokey Brown from some crooked cops, who is then taken in by Joseph's grandmother Erina. Later, while dealing with a mafia henchman at a restaurant, Joseph, Erina, and Smokey meet a mafia acquaintance of Speedwagon's who informs them that Speedwagon has been killed by Straizo. Erina realizes that the Stone Mask must somehow be involved. Joseph is later confronted by a rejuvenated Straizo who has come to kill the boy and Erina because they know about the Stone Mask. However Joseph, vowing to make Straizo pay for upsetting his grandmother with the news of Speedwagon's death, makes the first move with a surprise and over-the-top tommy gun attack.

Straizo recovers from Joseph's attack and uses the same laser eye attack Dio used to seemingly pierce through Joseph's head and neck, however, he was prepared. Joseph then attacks Straizo with his Hamon but Straizo uses a scarf woven from the shells of a rare beetle to conduct away the Hamon. Joseph then blows Straizo apart with grenades, running off with Smokey to the Brooklyn Bridge as the vampire's body parts reassemble. Straizo catches up with them and uses a woman hostage to goad Joseph into facing him. Straizo once again attacks Joseph with his laser, but Joseph reflects it back at him before striking him with the Hamon. Mortally wounded, Straizo he reveals that he did not kill Speedwagon, but spirited his body away from the cave along with the corpse to prevent the Pillar Man feeding off the blood hespilled. Before Joseph can learn anymore as his opponent explains the Pillar Man will teach him the meaning of evolution, Straizo uses the Hamon he stored in his body to destroy himself. Meanwhile in Mexico, a German military general named Rudol von Stroheim, searching for ways to enhance the German military effort interrogates Speedwagon about the Pillar Man which he intends to revive. Joseph also makes his way to Mexico concerned about the Pillar Man, unaware that he is being followed by a strange assassin.

Joseph is confronted in the desert by Donovan, one of Stroheim's assassins, but manages to subdue him and learn that Speedwagon is still alive. Meanwhile, Stroheim manages to awaken the Pillar Man by sacrificing several prisoners to flood the figure with blood. Once it awakes, Stroheim dubs him Santana.^[c] To test Santana, Stroheim sends in a prisoner changed into a vampire by a stone mask. Santana absorbs the vampire into his body to feed himself before uttering Stroheim's name, twisting his body while escaping into the air vents into the observation chamber. He then confronts Stroheim over being prematurely awakened, entering the body of one soldier he consumes from the inside while kill the rest by mimicking their gunfire with the bullets they shot at him. At that moment, Joseph reveals himself dressed as a German soldier after an earlier failed attempt at cross-dressing to sneak into the base. He then challenges Santana using his Hamon powers.

Jojo tries to humor Santana, theorizing that he killed Stroheim's men in self defense before the Pillar Man attacks him out of being annoyed. Joseph finds his Hamon effective against the Pillar Man as it helps protect him from the attacks. After receiving a powerful hit, Joseph appears to be knocked unconscious and Santana begins to absorb him. But Joseph, deducing the Pillar Man's cells use an euphoria-inducing digestive acid to feed, feigned being unconscious to uses his Hamon within Santana's body to rip him in half. Joseph attempts to drag Santana’s torso into the sunlight to petrify him, only to be immobilized by Santana's flesh before he could reach the exit. Stroheim tries to open the door himself, but Santana ensnares his leg. Stroheim convinces Joseph to chop off his leg, allowing him to open the door and expose Santana to the sunlight. But Santana diving into Stroheim's body through his wound while attempting to manipulate him into a well, the German informs JoJo of other Pillar Men his group discovered in Roman. Telling Joseph to stop the other Pillar Men, Stroheim explodes a grenade in an attempt to destroy Santana at the cost of his own life. Though Santana survived and makes one last ditch attack on Joseph while reaching the well, the Pillar Man learns too late that the human is using the noon sunlight reflected in the well's water to turn him back into stone.

Speedwagon takes the statued remains of Santana to the headquarters of his foundation in Washington, D.C. Santana is still alive, but Speedwagon's scientists are able to keep him dormant by the use of ultraviolet light. Remembering Stroheim's words that there are three more powerful Pillar Men somewhere in Europe, Speedwagon takes Joseph to Rome where they meet Will Zeppeli's grandson, Caesar. Both Joseph and Caesar express a dislike towards each other as they test each other’s Hamon abilities. Caesar then makes arrangement for Joseph and Speedwagon to be taken to the Colosseum where the Pillar Men are being kept. One of the Pillar Men, Wamuu, breaks free, killing a group of German soldiers and awakening his masters, Kars and Esidisi. As they leave, Wamuu accidentally bumps into Caesar's friend Mark, destroying half of his body. Caesar is forced to use his Hamon to peacefully end Mark's suffering and vows vengeance against the Pillar Men.

Caesar engages Wamuu in battle with his Hamon Bubble Launcher, only to learn the three Pillar Men have encountered Hamon users in ancient times and developed fighting styles to counter as Wamuu uses his headgear to unleash a wind that bursts all the bubbles, creating hundreds of miniature tornadoes that shred Caesar's skin, leaving temporarily blind in one eye. As Kars and Esidisi head to the surface, Joseph proclaims that he has developed his own special Hamon technique using a pair of clackers. Wamuu allows him to fight, slicing through Joseph's wrist artery to make the battle last only a minute. Joseph's attack actually succeeds in landing a blow on Wamuu, but Wamuu counters with his Divine Sandstorm leaving Joseph barely alive. Joseph pretends to run away, deflecting Wamuu’s attention from Caesar and Speedwagon, and tricks Wamuu onto a mine cart ride through the ruins. Wamuu intends to kill Joseph for his insolence however Joseph proclaims that he would be stronger in a month's time. Intrigued, Wamuu decides to let Joseph live, but implants a 'Wedding Ring' around Joseph’s aorta that will release a deadly poison in 33 days' time, with the antidote held in his lip piercing. Esidisi then implants another poison-filled ring around Joseph's windpipe, with the antidote contained in his nose piercing. Kars passes on the game and the Pillar Men leave in search of the Red Stone of Aja. Caesar now realizes Joseph's resolve and promises to aid him.

Wanting to teach Joseph to control his Hamon powers, Caesar takes him to meet his teacher Lisa Lisa in Venice. Lisa Lisa orders Joseph to wear a mask that limits his breathing for the duration of his training to better focus his Hamon. Lisa Lisa tasks Joseph and Caesar to climb the Hell Climb Pillar, a 24-meter pillar covered in oil. They can only climb it using Hamon or else they will starve to death at the pillar's foot. Observing Caesar's efforts, Joseph learns to climb up by focusing Hamon energy into just his fingertips. As the days pass, Joseph assumes a crack in the pillar is an easy break, but this turns out to be a trap, causing the pillar to start spewing oil out horizontally at high pressure at its 20-meter mark. Caesar manages to pass through by using Hamon energy to simultaneously grip the pillar with his feet and repel the barrier, eventually reaching the peak. Joseph eventually manages to get past by travelling across the oil barrier to its weakest point so he can leap over it, but as he runs out of breath at the last meter, Caesar helps him up. Joseph is pleased with the results of his training, now able to keep a glass of water from spilling when held upside down, and asks for the next test. Lisa Lisa then brings in her servants, Messina and Loggins.

Lisa Lisa explains that Kars is seeking a perfectly cut red stone known as the Super Aja to power the Stone Mask he created and become the ultimate lifeform. However, she reveals that she possesses the Super Aja when her assistant Suzi Q comes in with a ruby necklace. Joseph says they should destroy the stone, but Lisa Lisa reveals that it is capable of amplifying the light of the sun into a powerful beam, needed to defeat the Pillar Men. With a week left until the rings inside Joseph dissolve and kill him, Lisa Lisa pits JoJo and Caesar against Loggins and Messina respectively for their final lesson. However, when Joseph reaches his destination, he finds Loggins has already been killed by Esidisi. Angered, Joseph decides to confront Esidisi over a bed of spikes. Thanks to an intricate trap, Joseph manages to use a wire set-up on Loggins to sever Esidisi's arm. However, Esidisi manages to repair himself by taking Loggins' arm before attacking Joseph with his Mode, an ability to control the temperature of his burning blood. Despite nearly falling for a trap himself, Joseph manages to ensnare Esidisi in Hamon-conductive wool thread using sleight of hand, and hits him with the Hamon, managing to destroy him and retrieve his antidote, safely dissolving the ring around his windpipe, leaving only six days left until Wamuu's poisonous ring dissolves. Relieved, Joseph heads back to the castle, unaware that Esidisi's nervous system is clinging onto his back.

As Joseph waits to warn Lisa Lisa about the Pillar Men, Esidisi's nervous system takes over the body of Suzi Q and sends the Super Aja off on a boat bound for Venice. Before Joseph and Caesar can pursue the boat, Esidisi stands in their way, knowing full well they cannot kill him without killing Suzi Q as well. As Esidisi boils his host's blood to kill everyone in the room, Joseph and Caesar combine their Hamon in opposing forces, forcing Esidisi's nervous system to safety release Suzi Q before burning away while exposed to sunlight. After healing Suzi Q, Lisa Lisa learns from her that the Red Stone has been sent to St. Moritz in Switzerland, where Kars and Wamuu are waiting. Joseph promises Suzi Q that he will see her again before he, Caesar, Lisa Lisa, and Messina head off to catch up to the mail train bound for Switzerland. Upon catching up to the train at customs, the Germans arrive and claim the Red Stone of Aja for themselves, inviting Joseph and the others to join them at their lodge. As Kars attacks the lodge, Joseph learns that the leader of the German group is none other than Stroheim, who has since become a cyborg.

Stroheim's mechanical body was designed to surpass Santana, however it proves futile against Kars' Light Mode, a series of jagged blades on his arm that move so fast in a chainsaw motion that they radiate light. Kars literally cuts Stroheim down to size and attempts to retrieve the Red Stone of Aja, but Stroheim fires a beam of ultraviolet light at him, sending the Red Stone sliding towards a cliff edge. Joseph and Kars to chase after it and although Joseph grabs the stone, Kars pulls him off the cliff with him, wanting revenge for Esidisi's death. Joseph manages to save himself by using the Red Stone as a shield and prevents his fall by chaining a series of icicles together which Caesar uses to pull him up to safety. Kars lands safely far below, before heading to his daytime hideout. The next day, Caesar and the others discuss ambushing an abandoned hotel that they believe is Kars' hideout before Wamuu arrives from Greece, however Joseph objects to the plan, believing it unwise to fight Kars on his home turf. Caesar disagrees, wanting revenge for the past, leading to a fist fight with Joseph and then Caesar heads to the hotel by himself. Lisa Lisa orders Messina to follow him, before telling Joseph a little more about Caesar's past.

Lisa Lisa tells Joseph of Caesar's childhood, in which he took to crime at a young age after being abandoned by his debt-ridden father, Mario Zeppeli. When Caesar turned 16, he encounters his father and came across the wall containing the Pillar Men that is rigged with a trap by Kars. Mario, failing to recognize his son, died saving Caesar and used his last moments in instructing him to learn Hamon from Lisa Lisa. Back in the present, Caesar and Messina arrive at the hotel and Caesar is attacked outside by Wamuu using his Wind Mode, utilizing streams of moist air to both protect him from the sunlight and reflect the light around him. Wamuu wounds Messina and drags him into the hotel, prompting Caesar to go in after him. Using his new Bubble Cutter attack and a series of refractive bubble lenses, Caesar manages to wound Wamuu and redirect the sunlight inside the hotel to pin him down. However, Wamuu delivers a critical counter attack. Dying, Caesar uses the last of his strength to steal Wamuu’s piercing into a blood bubble before being crushed by the collapsing ceiling. Wamuu, respecting Ceasar's resolve, allows the bubble to remain for Joseph. Joseph and Lisa Lisa enter the hotel and see the light of Caesar's Final Hamon. Finding the bubble with the antidote and Caesar's bandana, they sadly realize that Caesar is dead.
21	'A Hundred Against Two'^[31] Transcription: 'Hyaku tai Ni no Kakehiki' (Japanese: 100対2のかけひき)	Shōgo Yasukawa	March 1, 2013	March 18, 2017
Following Wamuu's trail of blood, Joseph and Lisa Lisa encounter a vampire named Wired Beck whom the latter easily defeats him using her Hamon-empowered scarf. As a promise to Caesar, Joseph states he will not take the antidote until he has beaten Wamuu. They soon encounter Wamuu and Kars, along with a hundred vampire minions. Lisa Lisa manages to hold off their attack bluffing that if she and JoJo are killed, a time bomb will destroy the Red Stone of Aja. She proposes that Joseph fight Wamuu whilst she fights Kars with the Red Stone on the line. Wamuu and Kars arrange a place for the battle at midnight, keeping Lisa Lisa as insurance. Whilst retrieving the Red Stone, Joseph finds a picture of his grandmother Erina from fifty years ago with Speedwagon, Straizo, and an infant. Upon meeting at the arena, Lisa Lisa reveals that she was the baby that Erina rescued from the ship that fateful day 50 years ago and was raised by Straizo who taught her about the Hamon and gave her the Red Stone. Joseph and Wamuu's battle is revealed to be a chariot race using vampire horses and Joseph puts on Caesar's bandana and prepares to do battle.

Before Joseph's and Wamuu's race begins, it is revealed that during each lap, there will be a different weapon for whoever can grab it from a pillar first. Joseph manages to get a head start by obstructing Wamuu's wheels with rubble, allowing him to get hold of the first weapon, a sledgehammer. However, Wamuu grabs hold of the pillar itself, forcing Joseph to abandon his chariot, although Joseph uses the hammer to avoid being trampled by Wamuu's horses. Wamuu launches an attack on Joseph by hiding within his horse, but Joseph manages to turn Wamuu's Divine Sandstorm attack back against him with the Hamon. In order to regain his focus, Wamuu gouges out his eyes and grows a horn that can sense the wind. The second lap offers a pair of crossbows. Joseph picks up one that is too big for him to use whilst Wamuu uses the wind to guide his shots with a smaller crossbow, managing to hit Joseph's sides with a reflected shot. As he is thrown to the ground, Joseph uses the momentum of the fall to cock his crossbow and manages to hit Wamuu with a Hamon-charged shot from his crossbow by distracting his senses with pebbles. Wamuu makes a desperate last attack by firing his severed arms at Joseph to cut off his breathing before gathering up wind for his Final Mode.
23	'The Warrior of Wind'^[33] Transcription: 'Kaze ni Kaeru Senshi' (Japanese: 風にかえる戦士)	Kazuyuki Fudeyasu	March 15, 2013	April 1, 2017
Launching his Final Mode attack, Gathering Gale,^[d] Wamuu fires a stream of wind capable of cutting stone towards Joseph. After a failed attempt with a firebomb, Joseph strikes Wamuu with Caesar's flaming bandana, which Wamuu shreds with his wind. However, as planned by Joseph, Wamuu breathed in both the oil from the bomb and the burning embers of Caesar's bandana which cause him to explode from the inside. Realizing Wamuu's wounds are fatal, Joseph gives him some of his own blood to ease his passing as a sign of respect, as Wamuu showed Caesar. When the other vampires suddenly attack, Wamuu uses the last of his strength to kill them, not wanting them to interfere until the end and requests that Joseph drinks the antidote from his ring, before passing away without regret. Lisa Lisa prepares to battle Kars, who removes his headgear revealing long flowing hair. Lisa Lisa seems to be winning until learning the Kars she defeated was a vampire body double as the real Kars arracks her from behind. After claiming the Red Stone of Aja for himself, Kars sends his vampire army after the weakened Joseph, but he is rescued by Stroheim and his men, along with Speedwagon and Smokey, using ultraviolet lights to fight off the vampires. Joseph faces Kars who dangles Lisa Lisa's unconscious body over a bed of sharp crystals forcing Joseph into a vulnerable position. Smokey realizes that Joseph does not yet know that Lisa Lisa is his mother.
24	'The Ties That Bind JoJo'^[34] Transcription: 'JoJo o Musubu Kizuna' (Japanese: JOJOを結ぶ絆)	Yasuko Kobayashi	March 22, 2013	April 8, 2017
Joseph is forced to cling onto a rope to stop Lisa Lisa from falling to her death. He sets his scarf on fire, stating he will finish Kars off before it fully burns. Kars cuts the rope, but he falls instead into a trap laid by Joseph, who hits him with a Hamon attack, impaling him on the sharp crystals below. As Joseph rescues Lisa Lisa, Speedwagon explains to Smokey that Lisa Lisa's real name is Elisabeth and she was raised by Straizo who taught her the ways of the Hamon. She married George Joestar II, later giving birth to their child Joseph. On the run after murdering her husband's killer, Speedwagon erased her past, and placed her on Venice's Saplena Island where she changed her name to Lisa Lisa. Erina then raised Joseph, keeping his past a secret so he would never learn the Hamon and hopefully avoid the fate that befell the rest of her family. Meanwhile, Stroheim attempts to finish off Kars with multiple blasts of an ultraviolet beam, but Kars suddenly puts on the Stone Mask with the Red Stone of Aja in place. The artificial sunlight channels through the Super Aja, activating the Stone Mask and sending its undiluted energy into Kars, who undergoes a dramatic transformation.
25	'The Birth of a Superbeing !!'^[35] Transcription: 'Chō Seibutsu no Tanjō !!' (Japanese: 超生物の誕生 !!)	Yasuko Kobayashi	March 29, 2013	April 15, 2017
Kars turns into the ultimate life form thanks to the power of the Aja stone and demonstrates his new powers to manipulate his body at a genetic level. The sun rises, killing the rest of the vampire minions, but Kars remains immune. Joseph grabs the stone and runs off with Kars in pursuit, transforming into a bird-like creature. Joseph takes one of the German planes to lure Kars away from the others and hopes that he may be able to destroy Kars by forcing him into a volcanic island. Kars attacks JoJo's plane in various ways causing it to go out of control, but Joseph drops his parachute carrying a dummy to lure Kars into the path of the plane. Joseph then flies the plane towards the volcano's crater with Kars trapped on the nose. Kars attempts to escape but Stroheim who had jumped on board earlier, manages to stop him and rescue Joseph before the plane crashes into the magma. Joseph and Stroheim land safely but they see that Kars still alive within the boiling volcanic magma.

While it seemed Joseph won, Kars managed to develop an continuous insulating layer of air bubbles to endure the magma as he emerges while slicing off Joseph's hand in one swift movement. Kars is revealed to be the last of an ancient race that he slaughtered when they resisted his intention to evolve into a god at the expense of other living creatures. Kars then subjects Joseph to a more potent form of Hamon, but when Kars goes for the kill, Joseph subconsciously holds up the Super Aja. The stone intercepts Kars' Hamon and transmits the magnified energy into the volcano causing it to erupt, blasting Joseph and Kars into the air on a large piece of rock. Suddenly Joseph's severed arm hits Kars and distracts him long enough for the Pillar Man to be knocked higher by more flying rocks. Kars ends up being blasted out of Earth's atmosphere, becoming frozen lump of organic mineral as he drifts away from the planet. Joseph loses consciousness as his chunk of rock plummets back to the ocean and on February 28, 1939, Joseph Joestar is pronounced dead. However, he surprisingly appears at his funeral weeks later, having survived the fall and landing near Venice. He says he was nursed back to help by Suzi Q, whom he recently married, and received a prosthetic hand from Stroheim. Epilogue: Joseph and Suzie Q move to America after learning that Lisa Lisa (Elizabeth) is his mother, and she then remarries in 1948. Erina lived out the rest of her life as an elementary school teacher and died in 1950 at the age of 81. Speedwagon died two years later at the age of 89 with no heirs. Smokey Brown ultimately became the first black mayor of his hometown in Georgia. Stroheim died an honorable death with the German forces on the frontlines at the Battle of Stalingrad. Preview: In 1987 at JFK Airport, a 67-year-old Joseph lashes out at a Japanese tourist, angry at having to fly to Tokyo to see his daughter after she married a Japanese man. Four years earlier, a strange coffin is salvaged from the bottom of the Atlantic Ocean off the coast of the Canary Islands, engraved with the name 'DIO'. Meanwhile in 1987 Tokyo, a young man wearing a school uniform and cap sits in a jail cell with an ominous aura around him.
